Namibian legends ready to welcome SA legends

• Repeat of 1998’s game on the cards
Legendary Namibian footballers are dusting off their boots as they prepare to face South African legends on 18 November in the ninth edition of the Dr. Hage Geingob Cup at Independence Stadium in what is set to be a battle of revenge between the two sides.
Limba Mupetami
The highly anticipated ninth edition of the Dr. Hage Geingob Cup, which will take place on 18 November, was launched in Windhoek yesterday.

The launch attracted a host of football lovers and leaders, as well as local entertainers.

The big clash will see Namibian football legends go up against their South African counterparts in a repeat of the famous 1998 Cosafa Cup qualification match at the Independence Stadium, in which Namibia beat South Africa 3-2.

That same year, during the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) clash, South Africa, led by their danger man Benni McCarthy, scored a 4-1 victory against the Namibians.

Friendly rivalry

For the launch, the organisers flew in one of the stars from that winning clash, Doctor Khumalo, who fired friendly warning shots at the likes of Ricardo Mannetti, stating that there would be a repeat of the 1998 scoreline. He added that they might even have to rope in McCarthy, who was the mastermind behind Namibia’s defeat.

Mannetti shot back, warning that they have never lost at the Independence Stadium, and said even if Khumalo could bring 400 South African legends on the day, they would still lose.

The two rivals and friends shared a hug and wished each other well as they await next month's clash.

Public vote

The surprising news of the day was that African Stars, the local Premier League champions, are also set to feature.

They will play the main match of the day against one of the premier league clubs, which will be picked by the public through a SMS line (*142*2023#).

The legends will be paid an appearance fee, whereas the winners of the main match will receive N$250 000 and the runners-up will bag N$100 000.

The Hopsol League Team 1 will play the curtain-raiser against Hopsol League Team 2. The Ongo’s Ladies team, formerly known as Tura Magic Ladies, who won the FNB Women Super League, will face Gals & Goals FC, the runner-ups.

The winners of the women’s clash will receive N$100 000, whereas the runner-ups will bag N$50 000.

The entrance fee is N$20, and whether the proceeds from the gates will go to the Brave Warriors to cover expenses for next year’s Afcon preparation is still to be decided by the organisers.

Moreover, the event will see performances by the likes of Tati Buti, King Tee Dee, Top Cheri, MBM and DJ Shoza.

Second to last

One of the organisers of the event, Amos Shiyuka, said next year’s cup, which will mark the 10th edition, will be the last.

“The president of Namibia and the patron of the cup, Hage Geingob’s term ends next year, so he will step down with the cup,” he said.
