Chief Santos expands to academy
People's club alive and kicking
Chief Santos, coached by Namibia's finest defender Mohammed Ouseb, is well on its way to incorporate young players into its ranks.
Tsumeb football club Chief Santos is set to meet with parents of aspiring soccer stars next month as the club introduces its newly established football academy. Coached by Mohammed Ouseb, the club is looking to form relationships with parents during the meet on 2 April.
Players will be coached by Ouseb, who in his heyday played for South Africa's Premier Soccer League club Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and Norway's Lyn Oslo, with his football career having started at Chief Santos.
He also played for the Namibia national football team at the 1998 African Cup of Nations. Ouseb has a lot of experience and is looking to plough back into his hometown.
He said he will divide his attention between the senior players and the junior players from the academy. “The players from the academy will train from 14:00 to 15:30, while the players from the club train from 17:30 to 19:00. So, there is time to do both. We pushed out information looking for an academy coach, but the response has been very slow, so I just took it upon myself to coach them,” Ouseb added.
He added that they are trying to expand the club beyond just football and aim to incorporate a netball and basketball team.
“In the future, we want to turn Santos into a sports club,” he said.

Ouseb said since there has been no domestic league action, the Santos technical team of Santos has working on keeping the senior players fit.
“We have the Maize Triangle League to look forward to," the coach said. "There is a possibility that it will return next month. We last competed in it last year. Benfica Fooball Club is also planning a cup tournament for next month."
Just like many other clubs, Santos is looking for sponsorship to execute their plans and to give hope to young players.
“We have knocked on the doors of corporates to sponsor the academy and really hope that they can see the potential which lies ahead.”

Club chairman Lilongeni Geiseb said they have three set-ups in the club, which includes the academy, the youth team and the club itself.
“We want players to graduate from the academy and move onto the youth club as well as the first club,” he said.
He added that they are looking for players around the ages of five to 17 to join and have partnered with Etosha Secondary School and Francis Galton Primary School to lobby young players to join the academy.
Santos in the past has produced phenomenal footballers like Ouseb, Gerros Urikhob, Berlin Auchumeb, Rodney Doeseb, Nelson Geingob, Warren Neidel, Steve Tjeenao, Gervatius Uri Khob, Brian Gurirab, Celestine Wasserfall and George Hummel.
