Youth Olympic hopefuls stranded without food and accommodation

Thirty-six of Namibia’s rising athletes, selected to compete at the Northwest University (NWU) Schools Top 30 Athletics Tournament, risk being stranded as they cannot raise the N$74 760 needed for food and lodging.The event, set for 22 to 24 September at McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom, South Africa, is a crucial qualification step for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.Most of the athletes – from Ohangwena, Omaheke, Kavango West, Erongo, Oshana and Oshikoto – come from underprivileged communities.Head coach Eward Kapewanasha said several team members have already proven their calibre. “Kambira Kazatjo won a silver medal in the 400 m event, alongside Linda Hailulu in the 1 500 m and Maria Kanyanga, who took the 5 000 m and 10 000 m at the national senior championships,” he said.Team manager Teofelus Moses expressed gratitude for the government’s support in providing transportation, but said the athletes remain in a desperate situation.“The team is expected to leave on 19 September and return on 25 September. As of today, only a few parents who can afford to contribute have done so.
