The job is not yet done for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games local organising committee (LOC), with several financial assessments and outstanding payments still being processed.

General manager of the LOC, Jacqueline Gertze, has asked for more time before providing a comprehensive report on the Games, which were held in Windhoek and Swakopmund from 3 to 14 July. Ten countries competed across 12 sporting codes during the event.

The initial budget for the Games stood at N$127 million, aimed at ensuring the smooth delivery of the regional spectacle.

“It is still early for the financial reports, but I will make sure that you receive them once everything has been properly assessed. As you know, we had different clusters involved. We still need individual reports from each of them in order to consolidate everything,” Gertze explained.

Settling payments

Gertze also confirmed that the committee is in the process of paying service providers and volunteers who supported the Games.

Information gathered by this publication suggests that many service providers have so far received only half of their agreed payments, with the remaining amounts still outstanding.

“We also need to ensure that all volunteers receive their funds. That is what we are currently working on. This is why it’s important to complete these phases before we can release an official report,” Gertze said.

Stepping in at short notice

Namibia hosted the Games after Mozambique, the original host nation, pulled out due to adverse weather conditions. Namibia, which was initially scheduled to host in 2026, accepted the late invitation to step in.

Namibia Sports Commission chief administrator Freddy Mwiya shared his thoughts on the event during an appearance on the Sport Wrap show.

“I think we have to be proud as Namibians for managing to host this event under such tight timelines. We did not have enough time to prepare, but we pulled it off.

“I want to thank everyone involved, as well as the countries that participated. This was a significant achievement for our nation. I’m truly proud of everyone who played a part,” Mwiya said.
