Windhoek Gymnasium triumphs at 2025 Hollard Interhigh after a thrilling week of competition

The much-anticipated Hollard Interhigh 2025 came to a dramatic and spirited conclusion on Saturday, as Windhoek Gymnasium was crowned overall winner after five days of fierce cultural and sporting competition against long-standing rivals Windhoek High School (WHS). The event, proudly sponsored by Hollard, ran from Tuesday to Saturday and drew large crowds from across the capital.

The Interhigh opened on Tuesday with the cultural showcase, where WHS asserted its dominance in performance, creativity, and school pride — clinching an early win and setting the tone for a competitive week ahead.

From Wednesday onwards, the focus shifted to sport. A full schedule of matches saw learners from both institutions competing in a wide variety of disciplines — from archery and table tennis to netball, rugby, hockey, football, and basketball.

The hockey matches were closely contested. The U19 boys played to a gripping 2-2 draw, while Windhoek Gymnasium’s U19 girls delivered a clean 2-0 victory over their WHS counterparts. On the football pitch, Gymnasium edged out WHS 1-0 in the U19 A match.

Basketball enthusiasts were treated to high-energy performances. Windhoek Gymnasium’s U19 A girls narrowly defeated WHS 23-21 in a tightly contested match. On the boys’ side, WHS bounced back with a commanding 62-52 win, showcasing their depth and determination.

Netball fans saw the Windhoek Gymnasium Black Diamonds secure a 35-30 win in the first teams' clash — another highlight in Gymnasium’s strong sporting showing throughout the week.

The climax of the Interhigh came on Saturday with the U19 first team rugby match, regarded as the pinnacle of the event and the official decider of the overall winner. A spirited and physical encounter saw Windhoek Gymnasium emerge victorious with a convincing 30-14 scoreline, ultimately securing their claim to the 2025 Hollard Interhigh title.

After the final whistle, Windhoek Gymnasium’s U19 rugby captain, Vincent Scholtz, expressed his emotion in a moment of pride and gratitude:

“Ek is lost for words. Die seniors in ons span stap weg met ’n wen in ons laaste jaar. Die juniors het opgedaag, hulle het gestep up, almal het vir mekaar gespeel. Ons het vir mekaar gesê jy speel vir die man langs jou in die trui.”

Though WHS opened strongly with their cultural win and showed pockets of excellence on the courts and fields, it was Windhoek Gymnasium’s consistency across the board that proved decisive. The event showcased not only athletic prowess but also the unity, pride, and sportsmanship of both schools.

The Hollard Interhigh remains a flagship event on the Namibian school calendar — a celebration of youth, discipline, and the enduring power of rivalry to bring out the best in young athletes and artists alike.
