France underlined their status as one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice in an emotional night for Les Bleus.

Mbappe opened the scoring before running to embrace coach Didier Deschamps, who returned to the bench after attending his mother's funeral in France. The rest of the squad joined in a heartfelt group celebration, highlighting the unity within the French camp.

Bradley Barcola doubled the lead before Mbappe struck again to take his tournament tally to six goals, drawing level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

Deschamps praised the togetherness of his squad after the victory.

"This group is united, and they delivered when I was not here. Team spirit alone doesn't win matches, but without it you can lose games. The collective strength is above everything," he said.

Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni said the players were motivated to perform for their coach during a difficult period.

"We know the coach is going through a lot, and we are trying to give everything to make him as happy as possible."

France also continued their remarkable attacking form, becoming the first team to score three or more goals in five consecutive World Cup matches. Michael Olise provided two more assists, taking his tournament total to five.

Former England striker Ian Wright described France as "one of the most clear favourites" he has seen at a World Cup, while 1998 World Cup winner Patrick Vieira declared Les Bleus "the team to beat."

France will now face Paraguay in the Round of 16 as they continue their quest for another World Cup title.
