Walvis Bay hosts 2025 Mayor’s Cup

The Municipality of Walvis Bay Junior Council successfully staged the 2025 Mayor’s Cup Tournament, drawing together high schools from across the harbour town for a weekend of spirited football and netball action. Open to boys and girls under 20, the event promoted youth participation in sport while strengthening school pride and community ties.
Soccer showdown
Eight schools battled it out on the football field with passion and determination. Duinesig High School lifted the trophy after edging out De Duine Senior Secondary in a thrilling final, while Tutaleni Senior Secondary secured third place by overcoming Narraville High School.
Duinesig’s journey to the title was dramatic. In the group stage, they faced their biggest rival, Kuisebmond Senior Secondary. Kuisebmond were reduced to ten men in the second half but managed to score first. Duinesig equalised in the dying minutes, ending the game 1–1. They then beat Narraville Senior Secondary 2–0, followed by a 2–0 win over Duneside. In the final against De Duine SS, Ruben Temusa scored the decisive free kick to secure a 1–0 victory.
Reflecting on the tournament, Duinesig coach Mr Lucky Abiniel said. “The overall preparation of the tournament went well and the learners enjoyed themselves as they were able to mingle off the field. We look forward to next year’s tournament.”
Netball thrills
On the netball court, six high schools showcased their talent and teamwork. Tutaleni Senior Secondary produced an exceptional display to claim the championship title against Duneside High School. Duinesig Senior Secondary finished third after defeating Kuisebmond Senior Secondary.
Building unity through sport
At the closing ceremony, the Mayor of Walvis Bay, Councillor Trevino Forbes, highlighted the spirit behind the tournament, “The purpose of this tournament is to bring learners and teachers together through sport. It is about building unity, teamwork and a stronger community.”
The Municipality praised the Junior Council for its dedication in planning and delivering the tournament. Initiatives such as the Mayor’s Cup not only encourage healthy competition but also nurture young talent, instil leadership and teamwork skills, and foster pride across the community.
