U21 teams' World Cup opponents identified

The pathways to success for Namibia Hockey at the 2025 FIH Under-21 World Cups for men and women have been laid out, with the completion of the draws for both tournaments last weekend.

The junior men’s field hockey team of coach Johann Weyhe will travel to India in November and has been placed in pool D with Spain, Belgium and Egypt.

The Namibians beat Egypt 3-1 at the Africa Cup in Windhoek earlier this year, but are expecting another tough encounter at the World Cup, when both nations will have a point to prove.

Weyhe says: “Belgium and Spain are not to be under-estimated, but as Namibian I have the belief that we can compete and will want to show what we are capable of.

“I’m relieved that we were not placed in a pool containing England or Germany. Our neighbours South Africa look to be in a tough pool A (with Germany, Canada and Ireland).”

Weyhe says Namibia Hockey’s high-performance squads are already preparing for the World Cup tournaments, with three training days per week including Saturdays.

“Our coaches also attend club matches and keep an eye out for players who show potential to be invited to join the HP squad. We might be announcing the touring squads in September.”

The Namibian junior women’s team of coach Sedtric Makati will start their campaign in Chile (1-13 December) in pool C along with Germany, India and Ireland. Namibia’s men and women both finished second behind South Africa at the continental qualifier in Windhoek.
