African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia’s final shoot of the season saw Oliver Schmidt and Jorine Krügel recently crowned the senior boys’ and senior girls’ champions at Windhoek International School (WIS).

The event attracted over 100 archers from various clubs and schools nationwide in the senior and junior age categories, putting their marksmanship to the test in the Bullseye and Animal Target rounds, with a combined maximum score of 1 200 for top honours.

The year-end shoot followed the national championships held at Olympia’s Trustco United Sports Field in the capital last month, where Krügel of Roots Gymnasium was crowned national champion alongside Windhoek High School’s (WHS) Burton Weakley.

Senior champions

Schmidt, a pupil at WHS, dominated the senior boys’ section with a 1 143 score to secure his first-ever overall gold medal of the competition.

He was followed by Community Hope School’s Fedaliz Basson in second place with 1 134 to take silver, while Windhoek Afrikaans Private School’s Ru-Wayne Bezuidenhout claimed bronze with 1 133.

In the senior girls’ section, national champion Krügel stormed to victory with a decisive 1 123, ahead of reigning Golden Girl (archer with the most gold medals in a season) Teresa Kasomba of Community Hope School, who tallied 1 109.

Rounding out the senior girls’ podium was Lume Kolver of Berg-Op Academy with 1 076.

Junior champions

Moria’s Luka Jansen van Vuuren dominated the junior boys’ overall standings with a 1 147 score, ahead of WAP’s Willem van der Merwe (1 141) and Moria’s Adrian Compaan (1 136).

In the junior girls’ section, WHS’s Zeanette Jacobs reigned supreme with a 1 088 score to clinch the overall title. She also matched the Bullseye record set by Charisme Rothen in July this year. Jacobs was followed by WAP’s Jeandrie van der Merwe on 1 068 to secure silver, ahead of bronze medallist Rauha Shapumba of St Paul’s College (1 062).

AAG champions

Archers, including parents outside the school system, also battled it out in the Adult Archery Group (AAG), which features Bullseye and 3D Target rounds with a maximum score of 900.

Outstanding archers were as follows:

Men’s winners: 1 Cruzeiro Garobeb, 2 Johann de Beer, 3 Willem Krügel.

Women’s winners: 1 Marionette de Waal, 2 Alida Bezuidenhout, 3 Charne Coetzee.

‘Cub archers did well’

WIS archery organiser Fortune Matambo praised the participants, especially the cub archers who braved windy conditions to give their best.

“These are the children from grades one, two and three, who did really well improving their scores. Thaviah Maduwearachchilage of Central Elite Archery Club impressed by improving her Bullseye score from 119 to 121,” he said.

Outgoing matric archers

The shoot also marked the final event for matric archers, including Weakley, Kasomba, Anielka Hayward of Danie Joubert Combined School, Kiaro Farao of WAP, and Liam Mouton of Walvis Bay Private School, who will next year head to university.

The organisers confirmed that the turnout included new archers who joined on the day, setting a strong foundation for next year’s season.

“It was an incredible event. Thanks to Windhoek International School for giving us the opportunity to use their premises for our shoot. We hope to have more archers join us next year from this school and others nationwide.”
