A selection of retired Namibian football legends will embark on a journey to Botswana in a bid to claim the Legends Four Nations Tournament title.
The event, which will feature the crème de la crème of Southern Africa’s past football stars, is scheduled to take place this Saturday in Francistown, Botswana.
The teams of Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will participate in the tournament as they roll back the glory years of their football careers.
Namibia will take on Botswana in their opening match, while Zimbabwe will face South Africa.
Former league-winning coach Bobby Samaria will lead the team in the competition, with Tim Ekandjo of MTC serving as chairman.
Samaria said: “We are extremely excited to participate in the Four Nations Tournament in Botswana. We are humbled by this invitation.
“It is great to see our legends so eager to play football again and reunite with old rivals in the spirit of camaraderie.”
The coach stated that they will do their best to beat the host nation, with hopes of facing South Africa in the final.
“It’s important to note that we could only select 21 players, although we are well aware that we have many more legends.
“We will continually rotate the legends team to give more retired players an opportunity to participate in a competition of this nature,” Samaria added.
Peter Mokwena has been appointed as the team manager, while former Brave Warriors captain Bimbo Tjihero will head the delegation.
The team will also travel with Melitta Mathe as their medic and Epafras Epafras as the media representative.
Head of delegation Bimbo Tjihero expressed excitement about the journey and applauded the organisers for the initiative.
“This is an initiative that we hope to grow beyond this tournament. The plan is to set up a formal structure that will allow our legends to contribute positively to Namibian football and society.
“We also want to find ways to appreciate our legends, keeping them active and engaged — and those plans are already underway,” Tjihero said.
The team is expected to depart for Botswana on Thursday.
The team’s attire — which consists of a football kit, tracksuits, bags, sneakers and step-out gear — is sponsored by MobiPay and CSS Tactical Solutions at a total cost of N$80 000, while the rest of the costs are covered by Clash of Legends Botswana.
List of players called up:
Paulus Shipanga, Steven Goagab, Wilhellem “Dokkies” Schmidt, Arnold Doeseb, Amos Shiyuka, Mohammed Ouseb, Frans Ananias, Malaegi Ngarizemo, Johannes Kasibu, Johannes “Congo” Hindjou, Konrad Khaiseb, Alfred Ndyenge, Rudolf Bester, George Hummel, Henrico Botes, Danzyl Bruwer, Razundara Tjikuzu, Abjater Namundunga, Robinson Iyambo, Richard Gariseb and Fillemon “Ronnie” Kanalelo.
