Record turnout marks Oshana Open

A record 89 players competed at the Oshana Open at Oshana Gymnasium on Saturday, marking the highest turnout at a tournament in the 2026 Bank Windhoek Grand Prix series so far.

The player field surpassed the 76 players who competed at the Swakopmund Open, 66 at the Keetmanshoop Open and 52 at the Walvis Bay Open.

Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) secretary general Israel Shilongo described the turnout as a significant milestone for the series and an indication of the growth of competitive chess in northern Namibia.

He said the increased participation established a new benchmark for the Grand Prix series while providing national contenders and emerging regional players with a competitive platform.

Open and women’s honours

Chitula claimed the open section title ahead of silver medallist Fillipus Endjala and bronze medallist Fame Thindimba.

Greyling secured the women’s section gold medal, finishing ahead of Lavinia Shikongo, who took silver, and bronze medallist Joy Nghishongwa. Jakobus Greyling was recognised as the tournament’s best local player.

Shilongo said the size of the field contributed to closely contested encounters.

“The record-breaking field resulted in fierce competition across all categories, producing tactical showcases and compelling battles,” he said.

Junior and cadet winners

Fabner Naboth claimed the junior section title ahead of second-placed Johannes Shikodhi and bronze medallist Moses Ngesheya.

In the cadet section, Erick Festus took top honours, with Ian Chembe finishing second and Angelo Haihambo completing the podium in third place.

Shilongo said the turnout reaffirmed the federation’s efforts to expand chess beyond the country’s traditional competitive centres and create opportunities for players across Namibia.

“The northern region has set an extraordinary new standard for participation and enthusiasm in Namibian chess,” he said.

He credited Bank Windhoek’s sponsorship of the Grand Prix series for supporting the federation’s nationwide development efforts.

Shilongo also thanked Oshana Gymnasium for hosting the tournament, Oshana Chess Association chairperson Benjamin Chikede for overseeing its local organisation, and the arbiters, coaches, parents and volunteers involved in staging the event.
