Rebels record first win over Wolves this season

Unam Rebels recently stunned Wolves 85-82 in a much-anticipated Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) premier league derby at Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS), marking their first win over their other Unam side this season with plenty of drama.

The main event headlined the first fixture since June, as both teams were in need of a win. Upping the stakes was Wolves having long lost their league-leading status, with their previous fixture loss to Afro Stars in June keeping them down in the standings.

Rebels have not had it easy either, having lost their previous three matches in a row, starting with a statement win by their arch-rivals Wolves in May, followed by Afro Stars and Quality Basketball Club in June.

Always a tough fixture

Reflecting on their first win against Wolves, Rebels coach Bruno Quizola was all smiles, acknowledging the tough competition their rivals always bring to the court.

“We thank God for this win. Congratulations to the players for finally pulling off a win they have been working hard towards. The game was very interesting as it was a clash between [arguably] the best teams in the country,” he said.

The game presented mixed results between quarters that had the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout, with a lot of emotions flying around.

Quizola admitted to his team’s slow start but said the players held their own, stuck together and made sure they always caught up on the scoreboard. “We capitalised on our opponents’ mistakes and this helped us be in the fight until the very end,” he said.

In the final seconds of the match, with the scoreboard reading 83-82 in favour of Rebels, Wolves’ Zion Nickle-Wilson (14) committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Rebels’ Mabeth Kazeurua (4), awarding Rebels two free throws, which they converted to pull away with a three-point cushion.

Quizola extended gratitude to the supporters who showed up to cheer them on the sidelines and further acknowledged his fellow opponent, Wolves coach Allan Nghixulifwa, for a good game.

Other results

Another premier league clash saw BAS Falcons dominate Unam Wildcats 79-37, while log leaders Afro Stars extended their winning streak with a narrow 72-68 victory over Quality Basketball Club.

The league, which resumed on Friday, also featured a first division encounter where Unam Cadets edged Quality Basketball Club 86-84.
