QBC hold off Wolves to reach Heroes Cup final

Quality Basketball Club (QBC) survived a spirited second-half fightback from Unam Wolves to claim a 66-60 victory in their Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) Heroes Cup semi-final at Unam Gym Hall on Sunday evening.The victory booked QBC a place in Wednesday’s men’s final against Nust Gladiators, who beat Division One side Unam Cadets 61-58 in the other semi-final. Cadets will thus meet Wolves for the third-place playoff match tomorrow.QBC took control from the opening quarter, racing to a 19-7 lead before adding another 22 points in the second period to head into half-time 41-26 ahead. At one stage, they had stretched the gap to a game-high 19 points at 30-11.The eventual winners had the scoreboard on lock, leading for 39 minutes and five seconds of the 40-minute encounter, with Wolves never holding the lead.Despite not getting ahead, Wolves refused to go quietly, winning the third quarter 18-11 to cut QBC’s advantage to 52-44 before taking the final period 16-14.By the midway point of the fourth quarter, the Wolves had clawed back to within one possession at 59-56.QBC then steadied themselves when it mattered most, outscoring Wolves 7-4 over the closing five minutes to shut the door on the comeback and secure their place in the final to be contested at Unam Gym Hall on Namibia’s Heroes Day.Small margins add upThe two sides were hard to separate on the glass. Both finished with exactly 74 rebounds, comprising 26 offensive and 48 defensive boards each.QBC, however, made slightly better use of the extra possessions, scoring 18 second-chance points to Wolves’ 14. They also scored 18 points off Wolves’ 23 turnovers, while Wolves managed 12 from QBC’s 22 giveaways.Their greater depth also proved valuable, with QBC winning the bench-scoring battle 26-16. All 10 QBC players who stepped onto the hardwood scored, and five finished with at least seven points.João Saponde (#12) supplied nine points off the bench, helping QBC maintain scoring production beyond their starting five.Another area where QBC found an edge was inside the three-point line, where they converted 23-of-55 two-point attempts for 41.8%, compared with Wolves’ 21-of-65 for 32.3%.QBC also made twice as many three-pointers, sinking six to Wolves’ three. That gave them a nine-point advantage from beyond the arc in a match ultimately decided by six.Wolves’ three-point return was costly. All three of their makes came from their captain Reggie Kauami (#2), with the rest of the players going for a combined 0-for-21 from deep.This lack of additional perimeter production limited their options as they tried to complete the comeback. Wolves nevertheless found other ways to stay alive.They beat QBC 40-38 in points in the paint, dominated the fast break 20-8 and converted nine free throws to QBC’s two, helping them stay in contention in the second half.However, QBC’s early cushion, better conversion from two-point range, greater bench production and ability to turn Wolves’ mistakes into points proved enough to keep them in front.Yauraa fills the stat sheetYaurovandu “Yauraa” Ndjavera was at the heart of QBC’s effort at both ends of the court.Playing the full 40 minutes, Ndjavera posted a double-double of 11 points and 17 rebounds, while also dishing out five assists, making three steals and rejecting five shots.His five blocks accounted for five of QBC’s eight as a team, while his efficiency rating of 28 was the highest recorded by either side.Ndjavera rejected the suggestion that QBC had made light work of Wolves despite keeping them behind on the scoreboard throughout.“I wouldn’t say it was light work, but yeah, we showed them,” he said.He attributed much of QBC’s success to their mentality on the defensive end, particularly when their offence was not producing.“If offence wasn’t going down, defence was the only way to stop them. I [also] made sure that I locked down their big man. They didn’t have anything on me. They couldn’t adapt.”When Wolves responded by sending extra defensive attention his way, he said that created opportunities elsewhere.“They [tried to shut me down] with two men on me, which was fine, because then I could pass the ball to my teammates and kill them that way.”Kevin Kazadi (#10) was another major presence for QBC despite a quiet scoring return. He contributed six points but matched Ndjavera with 17 rebounds, while also adding five assists, two steals and two blocks.Wolves had an even bigger individual effort on the glass through Mevin Muhinda (#12), who hauled down a game-high 25 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end, while adding 11 points and three steals.His work helped Wolves repeatedly create second opportunities and remain within striking distance despite their struggles from the perimeter.Other semi-final encountersIn the women’s semi-final encounters, Unam Phoenix proved too strong for Nust Dodgers, beating them 93-41 before Ongos Shooting Stars put 49-33 past BAS Falcons.Dodgers and Falcons will consequently meet in the women’s third-place playoff, while Phoenix and Shooting Stars contest the KBA Heroes Cup title tomorrow at Unam Gym Hall.– mariud@nsh.com.na
