The Otjinene Sports Office in the Omaheke Region has taken a new direction in engagement and sports development as it prepares to host its Stakeholders Games to raise funds for the sporting community this Saturday.
Being hosted at the Otjinene Sports Field, the Games will feature three main tournaments of football (seven-a-side), netball and mixed volleyball. Traditional games such as tug-of-war and chess will also take place as complementary activities on the sidelines.
The event follows a meet-and-greet initiative spearheaded by the new regional sports officer for the Otjinene constituency, Allan Kake, who took office in August.
Kake’s meet-and-greet, aimed at ensuring athletes take centre stage as proprietors of sport, revealed the need to host the Games as a platform for the community to network, share ideas and raise funds for the inaugural Otjinene Sports Fund.
“We aim to meet the government halfway in terms of development at all levels in the Otjinene constituency. We are thus hosting this event to raise funds from participation fees, vendor fees and gate takings,” he said.
Funds for sports development
The funds raised will go towards supporting schools with sports equipment, as well as individuals and teams representing the community at regional, national and international levels.
It will also support coaches, referees, umpires and sports administrators as they pursue their ambitions to introduce new sports codes, including tennis, basketball and swimming, in collaboration with the sports ministry.
“Sport holds great potential for business, career development and social upliftment. The Omaheke Region has enormous potential in terms of infrastructure, supporters and raw talent.
“With the support of the Otjinene community, we can help capitalise on these for the better,” he remarked.
Kake further extended an invitation to institutional workers, business employees, schools and all members of the Otjinene community to turn up in numbers for the event, whether to participate or simply to support the cause.
The tournament will start at 08:00 tomorrow and continue until late. Registrations are still open at a fee of N$1 000 per team and will close with the draw to be held at the Youth Office today at 18:00.
Interested participants can contact Alphons Tjatindi at 081 260 3011 to sign up their teams.
Prizes to be won
Organisers have confirmed that six football teams, five netball teams and two volleyball teams have so far registered for the tournament.
Outstanding teams in the main tournaments stand a chance to win gold medals and a trophy, while silver and bronze medalists will also receive certificates. In addition, 30% of the registration fees raised will be shared among the winners and runners-up.
“Spectators can look forward to exciting, friendly and competitive matches between various institutions across the participating sport codes. There will also be musical entertainment and a chance to network with key community stakeholders.”
The organisers plan to host more events of similar magnitude in the future to identify talent, develop sport in the town and promote community engagement through sport.
