The Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) has expressed its sincere appreciation to MTC Namibia for its unwavering support and commitment to the development of horse racing in the country over the past six years.

The association said the successful hosting of the sixth edition of the MTC Winter Cup once again demonstrated the positive impact of the partnership between the telecommunications company and Namibia’s horse racing fraternity.

The partnership began in October 2019 when MTC committed N$1.5 million towards horse racing sponsorship over an initial three-year period. The sponsorship was later increased to N$2.1 million for a further three years, reflecting the company’s growing confidence in the sport and its development potential.

To date, 11 sponsored events have been successfully hosted under the partnership, with a 12th event scheduled to take place in November this year.

According to the NHRA, MTC’s support has played a significant role in helping the association host major racing events while also contributing to infrastructure development at racecourses across the country. Improvements have included upgrades to ablution facilities, renovations and expansions of horse stables, enhancements to spectator areas, fencing and safety barriers, as well as maintenance work on racing tracks and other essential infrastructure.

Growth of the sport

NHRA president Gottfried Mootu said the partnership has become an example of how corporate sponsorship can contribute to the growth of sport and local communities.

“For six years, MTC has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the horse racing fraternity and has demonstrated a genuine commitment to the growth of our sport. Their support has gone far beyond race sponsorship. It has helped improve infrastructure, create opportunities for horse owners and jockeys, stimulate local economies, and provide a platform for communities to come together through sport,” he said.

Mootu noted that horse racing remains an important activity in many communities across Namibia, creating opportunities for participants while preserving a long-standing sporting tradition.

“Horse racing is more than just a sporting activity. It supports livelihoods, creates business opportunities, and preserves a rich heritage that is deeply rooted in many communities across Namibia. We are proud of how far we have come and grateful to MTC for believing in our vision,” he added.

Economic benefits

NHRA public relations officer Chantelle Mouton highlighted the broader economic benefits generated through horse racing events and sponsorship.

“The value of MTC’s sponsorship extends far beyond race day. It has helped create opportunities for horse owners, trainers, jockeys, breeders, local vendors, and many small businesses that benefit whenever horse racing events are hosted. Every race meeting contributes to economic activity within our communities while also providing a platform for talented horses and jockeys to showcase their abilities,” she said.

Mouton added that the association remains grateful for MTC’s continued investment in a sport that positively impacts many Namibians.

The NHRA said the 2026 MTC Winter Cup was another successful event, attracting competitors from various racing clubs and regions while providing spectators with a memorable day of sporting entertainment. The association further reaffirmed its commitment to growing horse racing across Namibia and strengthening its partnership with MTC in the years ahead.
