NHE Hoops triumphed over Wild Horses with a commanding 15-2 victory to clinch the title at the first-ever Bringing Basketball to //Kharas 3x3 tournament, hosted at Diaz Primary School in Lüderitz.

Five teams competed in the round-robin tournament, which featured 12 fast-paced matches, including the final.

Windbreakers secured third place after defeating Namibia Hoops 13-7 in the play-off.

In the semi-finals, Wild Horses overcame Windbreakers 13-8, while NHE Hoops outclassed Namibia Hoops 15-6.

The tournament welcomed a mix of young and senior players, creating a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere.

“It was a success. This was just a jumpstart, and we’re looking forward to hosting more tournaments. I’m impressed with the players who turned up, the ball-handling skills, and the potential that was on display,” said Justice Shikolalye, a member of the //Kharas Basketball Federation, which organised the event.

Shikolalye added: “We’re committed to developing basketball in the //Kharas Region with the support of the Namibian Basketball Federation. This was a step towards growing the sport in the South. We plan to develop a league; this is only the beginning. The initiative is led by passionate basketball lovers who’ve played the game for many years. The idea is to start with a 3x3 league and, as more players join, to establish a 5x5 league.”

He thanked the Regional Council and Diaz Primary School for their support, and appealed to companies to come on board. The Namibian Basketball Federation sponsored 20 basketballs and a set of hoops.

“We need uniforms. We’ve got U16 boys who represented the //Kharas Region in major basketball tournaments. Our players have competed in the FNB 5-on-5 and the Sanlam tournaments.”

Shikolalye emphasised the role of sport in youth development: “Sport is important for the youth, and we encourage them to participate. This is a beautiful game, and through it, young people can build healthy lifestyles and stay off the streets.”

The 3x3 format differs from traditional 5x5 basketball. Each team consists of four players, with three active on the court at a time, and both sides shoot at the same hoop. Matches are typically 15 minutes of running time, and the first team to reach 15 points wins the game.
