NFA leagues will return with black armbands

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) yesterday announced that all teams will be required to wear black armbands when league matches resume, in honour of the late President Hage Geingob.
Last Sunday saw the postponement of all NFA league fixtures, including the Debmarine Premier League and FNB Women’s Super League, after news of the death of the sports-loving Head of State broke.
NFA league director Mabos Vries and interim secretary-general of the association Jochen Traut confirmed to Sport Wrap that the armbands will be a standard requirement until the burial of the late President.
“At the moment we will continue with matches of league following the short term postponement.
“The teams will however be required to play with the armbands in honor of the late President,” Traut said yesterday.
The league director Mabos Vries also informed the newspaper that the clubs will have to provide the black armbands themselves.
“The NFA will not provide any black bands to clubs, but they will have to source it themselves.
“The league games that were postponed will also not be played this coming weekend, but will be shifted to other dates.
“The normal fixture plan will however take place in the way it was planned until it is decided otherwise,” Vries noted.
The wearing of armbands will be a standard requirement for both the Namibia Premier Football League and the FNB Women’s Super League.
Football fan Ricardo van Wyk lauded the NFA for the decision.
He reckons football has to continue as it would serve as a proper tribute and farewell to the late President.
“I fully understand why they had to stop the matches last Sunday, but it is good that they are considering to resume the fixtures as soon as possible.
“The bands on the arms and observing a moment of silence will be a mark of respect to a great man who loved sports dearly.
“I believe that this is what happens in such cases in every part of the world,” Van Wyk noted.
