Host nation Namibia did not fare well in their opening match of the COSAFA Girls’ Under-17 Championship, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Malawi at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.

Namibia, who began their preparations very late, were expected to struggle in this tournament, and it was evident on the opening day with their loss to Malawi.

Malawi scored two goals in the first half, with Namibian defender Uakatavisa Tjihiku unfortunately putting one into her own net after the ball deflected off the post.

Ethel Tambala added a second for Malawi just past the half-hour mark, giving her side a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.

Namibia attempted to score their first-ever goal of the tournament in the second half, but most of their attacking efforts proved fruitless.

The Malawians sealed their victory with a goal from Faluna Umali in injury time, securing all three points.

Zambia cruise

Zambia, on the other hand, showed why they remain one of Africa's top women’s football nations with a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique in Group B.

The star of the match was Ruth Mukoma, who scored a brace to help the holders to a dominant victory.

The defending champions already look on course for another COSAFA title, with Precious Mwape and Natasha Kasema also getting on the scoresheet in a fantastic team performance.

As things stand, Zambia are the team to beat, while Malawi will be eager to continue their strong start to the competition.
