Nakapunda ascends to African chess leadership

Candidate Master (CM) Otto Nakapunda has been elected secretary general of the African Chess Confederation (ACC) for a four-year term ending in 2030.

Nakapunda was elected at the recent 10th ACC Electoral General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, succeeding Angola’s Tito Martins, who served from August 2022 to July 2026.

Nakapunda brings considerable experience in chess administration, having previously served two consecutive terms as president of the Namibia Chess Federation.

He will serve on the newly elected ACC board alongside president Benard Wanjala of Kenya, who succeeded outgoing president Tshepiso Lopang of Botswana.

In a statement, the International Chess Federation (Fide) congratulated the newly elected officials and wished them success in advancing chess across the continent.

“Fide looks forward to continuing its close cooperation with the ACC to promote the development of chess throughout Africa,” the world chess governing body said.
