Lowkey gaining experience
Namibian lightweight boxer Jeremiah Nakathila says his experience of fighting in the USA has made him a better boxer than he had ever been.
Nakathila who has already fought in the USA four times in his career believes he can go back there and actually perform better than he ever did.
“Fighting in the USA has been one of the greatest things that happened in my career because I have been able to gain exposure and the experience of fighting on the world’s biggest stage.
“Fighting in such big arena with so many people will make your nervous and can result in you losing the fight.
“I am however a better boxer and will probably be able to advise many other boxers of my country who will have fights in such arenas in the future,” Nakathila said in an interview with Sport Wrap.
The 34-year old's first fight in USA was against America’s top boxer Shakur Stevenson for the WBO Super featherweight interim world title in 2021. He lost the fight after Stevenson sent him to the canvas with a combination of deadly punches in the fourth round before taking him to the last round.
In 2022 Nakathila returned to the USA for a fight against Miguel Berchelt in a nontitle fight were Nakathila redeemed himself with a victory against the Mexican.
This impressive performance saw him getting another call up to fight Raymond Muratalla in 2023 in a fight he lost by TKO.
In the same year, the boxer returned to the USA to battle Ernesto Mercado in a fight which saw him losing by TKO.
“Yes it was not the easiest of trips, but I gained so much experience in the process.
“I would love to return and fight there again but first I will have to do a few fights here in order to improve my rankings.
The boxer last fought against Evans Husayihwevhu in a fight where he redeemed himself with a unanimous decision victory.
He is now set to fight again at the MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing event slated for 17 August at the Windhoek Country Club.
“I have been feeling confident ever since increasing my weight to lightweight and now I am looking forward to my next fight.
“The difference now is that there is less hard work in the gym because my body got bigger and I have gained power,” he added.
Nakathila has a record of 28 professional fights, with an impressive 24 wins and four losses.
