Impressive Nghitumbwa continues reign

Fillipus Nghitumbwa looked impressive in retaining his African continental super bantamweight belt of the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) on Saturday night, when he stopped South Africa’s Sabelo Ngebinyange in the 11th round at Ramatex in Windhoek.

The fight was contested at a furious pace from the first round, with Nghitumbwa living up to his "Energy" moniker throughout. The brave South African’s punches visibly slowed down midway through the rounds – putting him at significant risk of harm against the vicious Namibian, who generated damaging power with his hook shots to the body.

Ngebinyange was also bleeding from the right eye during the later rounds and his corner men, including coach Colin Nathan, would have considered pulling their fighter out earlier than when they eventually threw in the towel in round 11.

The only knockdown of the fight was in round 9, when the South African landed on his back. Meanwhile, Nghitumbwa’s coaches were encouraging him to stay on the inside and not to allow Ngebinyange to keep a safe distance with his jab and movement.

The Namibian improved his record to 16 wins and one defeat (on points in his 2017 debut against Jonas Matheus), while Ngebinyange suffered his sixth loss in 21 fights, with 15 victories.

PUNCHING POWER

WBO Africa super middleweight title holder Paulinus "John John" Ndjolonimus scored a devastating seventh-round knockout win over Delali Miledzi of Ghana via a powerful left hook three seconds from the end of the round.

The awkward West African had shown good boxing skills and intelligent ring movement, which disrupted the Namibian’s rhythm – who, however, caught him with a stunning shot earlier in the 7th round to set up the knockout.

The previously unbeaten Ghanaian was immediately given medical attention and was taken to the hospital for a routine check-up.

Ndjolonimus retains his WBO Africa title and improves on his unblemished professional record to 15 in a row.

WINS FOR SHINIMA, HEITA

Earlier, Namibia’s Charles Shinima remained unbeaten and kept his WBO Africa welterweight title by overpowering Tiwo Olowu of Nigeria, with the visitor deciding against further punishment before the start of round seven.

Mateus Heita beat Hassan Milanzi of Zimbabwe via a technical knockout in the sixth round via a TKO – but the Namibian lost his titles because he failed the weigh-in on Friday as their World Boxing Association and WBO Africa super bantamweight fight was reduced to a non-title fight.
