Grootfontein overcome Kudus as United clash looms
FNB Grootfontein maintained their unbeaten start to the Namibia Rugby Union Premier League season with a hard-fought 24-19 victory over defending champions FNB Kudus on Saturday, strengthening their grip on top spot and underlining their status as genuine title contenders.
The northern side made it five wins from five matches as they overcame one of their toughest tests of the campaign. Captain Wikus Jacobs led from the front with a hat-trick of tries, while fullback Lorenzo Louis also crossed the whitewash for Grootfontein. Kudus remained within touching distance thanks to a brace from Aston Mukwiilongo and a try by centre Divan Steyn, but the league leaders held their nerve to secure a crucial victory and preserve their perfect record.
Elsewhere, FNB Wanderers kept the pressure on the leaders with an entertaining 52-41 victory over FNB UNAM. The Windhoek side outscored the students in a high-scoring encounter to remain firmly in contention near the top of the table.
Trustco United also produced an impressive performance on the road, defeating FNB Dolphins 50-19 in Swakopmund.
United established control early, scoring two first-half tries to open a 12-0 lead before continuing to apply pressure through both their forwards and backs. Dolphins struggled to match the visitors' pace and intensity, although the home side showed flashes of attacking quality throughout the contest.
The visitors carried a comfortable advantage into the halftime break and extended their lead shortly after the restart. Following a penalty line-out, United's forwards powered over for a converted try to stretch the score to 38-5.
Dolphins continued to battle and were rewarded with further tries later in the match, but United had the final say with a late score to complete a convincing 50-19 victory.
In the Rehoboth derby, FNB Rehoboth claimed local bragging rights with a 20-16 victory over FNB Reho Falcon. The win secured Rehoboth's first victory of the season and provided a welcome boost after a difficult start to the campaign.
With Grootfontein remaining unbeaten, Wanderers keeping pace and United strengthening their position among the leading contenders, the race for the 2026 NRU Premier League title is beginning to take shape.
Attention now turns to another pivotal round of fixtures next weekend. League leaders Grootfontein face what could be their toughest away assignment of the season when they travel to Trustco United in a clash between two of the league's form teams. Wanderers, meanwhile, will look to keep the pressure on the leaders when they host Western Suburbs, while Kudus will be eager to bounce back from their defeat when they welcome Reho Falcon.
Elsewhere, Rehoboth will aim to build on the momentum from their derby triumph when they host UNAM. With several teams still firmly in the hunt near the top of the standings, the upcoming round could play a significant role in shaping the championship race.
