African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia’s golden boy and golden girl, Burton Weakley of Windhoek High School (WHS) and Teresa Kasomba of Community Hope School, were recently crowned champions at this year’s Windhoek Afrikaans Private School (WAP) Shoot.

The event attracted 113 archers in the capital, who put their marksmanship to the test as they competed for crucial ranking points that count towards national team selection.

Archers battled it out across the senior and junior age categories in the Bullseye and Animal Target rounds, with a combined maximum score of 1 200.

Senior, junior winners

Competing in the senior section, the country’s reigning archery champion (hence the “golden boy” status) Weakley secured the overall title with a combined score of 1 161.

Right on his heels was Fedaliz Basson of Community Hope School, who claimed silver with 1 150, ahead of Roots Gymnasium’s Duan Kruger, who took bronze with 1 137.

The senior girls’ reigning champion, Kasomba, led the charge with a dominant 1 101, ahead of event runner-up Anielka Hayward of Danie Joubert Combined School (1 090). Rounding out the podium with bronze was Taylieschen Scott of WHS on 1 060.

The junior section also witnessed outstanding performances, with Willem van der Merwe of WAP scoring a section-high 1 123 to clinch the junior boys’ gold medal.

Van der Merwe was followed by Björn Bergmann of Central Elite Archery Club, who claimed silver with 1 105, ahead of third-placed Berend Blom of Moria Private School (1 092).

In the junior girls’ section, Jeandrie van der Merwe of WAP scored 1 091 to secure gold. She was followed by Zeanette Jacobs (1 072) of WHS for silver and St Paul’s College’s Ariadne van Wyk (1 068) for bronze.

Cubs, AAG winners

Cub archers were also on the range in a display of up-and-coming talent across the boys’ and girls’ sections.

The boys’ section was dominated by WAP’s Louw Rossouw and Xander Pearson in first and second places respectively, with Ebert Venter of Roots Gymnasium rounding out the podium in third.

In the girls’ section, Community Hope School’s Mercy Danster led the charge ahead of runner-up Talia Thatcher of Central Elite and Olivia Sakeus of Windhoek Christian Academy in third.

Parents also joined in on the fun, competing in the Adult Archery Group (AAG) category in the Bullseye and 3D Rounds, which carry a maximum score of 900.

Men’s winners: 1 Berend Blom (838), 2 Cruzeiro Garobeb (813), 3 Reinhold Rothkegel (793).

Women’s winners: 1 Marionette de Waal (824), 2 Alida Bezuidenhout (784), 3 Charne Coetzee (771).

Gratitude

Shoot organiser Madelyn Kruger dubbed the event a resounding success and praised the archers for persevering through the scorching heat at the range.

“It was very hot on the day. It was nice to see the archers’ determination and passion shine through as they braved the conditions. I would also like to thank my team for their perfect execution and for sticking to the schedule.

“It’s incredible how archery truly feels like a family. When small hiccups arise, everyone comes together to help and keep things on track. Heartfelt gratitude goes to all the archers who displayed integrity and, above all, had fun at the range,” she said.

Kruger also noted that the shoot was a precursor to the tenth AGA Namibia Nationals, set for 18 October in Windhoek, where the country’s new golden boy and golden girl archers will be crowned.
