First National Bank (FNB) Namibia has committed N$1.6 million towards this year’s FNB Classic Clashes.

The sponsorship was announced during the official launch of the tournament on Wednesday.

The support, made possible through the FirstRand Foundation, forms part of the bank’s continued efforts to uplift communities and create meaningful opportunities for young people through sport.

FNB Namibia investment head Ziggy Muinjo said the Classic Clashes remain an important platform for the bank, not only as a sponsor, but also as a supporter of school sport development.

“The kick-off of FNB Classic Clashes is always an exciting time for us at FNB Namibia and something that is marked in our calendars every single year, not only as proud sponsors, but also as passionate sports enthusiasts.

“There is something truly special about the spirit of Classic Clashes, and every year it reminds us why this platform continues to hold such an important place in Namibian school sports,” said Muinjo.

Investing in youth

Muinjo said the discipline, energy and determination shown by young athletes each year continue to prove the important role sport plays in shaping future leaders and strengthening communities.

“Beyond the health and wellness benefits, sport has the power to unite, inspire and uplift young people and their communities.

“At the grassroots level, sport gives young people a sense of belonging and purpose. It teaches discipline, resilience, teamwork and shared responsibility, qualities that we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to learn both inside and outside the classroom,” she added.

Muinjo said the sponsorship is also a direct commitment to the participating schools and athletes, whose dedication continues to inspire support for the platform.

“This sponsorship is our commitment to you, our youth, for your dedication to your respective sports, your schools and your country at large.

“You have proven time and time again that when young people are supported, incredible things can happen.

“From winning championships such as the Cosafa Cup to breaking world records on the Olympic stage, Namibian youth continue to show the world what they are capable of.

“This is our way of saying: We believe in you, and we are proud to stand behind you,” she said.

Growing popularity

The bank said the growing popularity of the FNB Classic Clashes has also led to increased interest from schools across the country in participating.

In response, the 2026 edition will serve as the final guaranteed participation year for the current cohort of schools involved in the competition.

From 2027 onwards, both existing and prospective schools will be invited to express interest in participating, with selections to be based on established criteria.

The decision is aimed at ensuring that more schools have an opportunity to benefit from the exposure, competition and development opportunities the tournament provides, while maintaining the high standards and competitive spirit associated with the FNB Classic Clashes.

FNB Namibia also extended its appreciation to the organisers, schools, coaches, teachers and supporters who continue to contribute to the success and growth of the event.
