Dakar exit exposes Namibia’s preparation gaps

A late injury-related change to Namibia’s beach volleyball team, compounded by limited preparation time and school commitments, has emerged as a contributing factor to the country’s early exit from the Dakar Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) president Tobias Eden Mwatelulo and head coach Aloisius Ishitile have acknowledged the challenges surrounding the selection and preparation of Rene Steinkopff and Robert Sinclair. The duo finished bottom of Pool A on Sunday after losing all three matches at Saly Beach West. They had been called up as replacements for Matheus Nahenda and Nathanael Ndemukulunga, who were originally announced by the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) as the country’s representatives in August.Mwatelulo told Sport Wrap yesterday that one of the originally selected players had suffered a thigh injury weeks before departure, leaving the federation with a difficult decision.‘We had two choices’The player was advised by a physiotherapist to refrain from sporting activity for two weeks before undergoing further assessment, leaving little time to determine whether he would be fit to compete.“We had two choices: either gamble and risk withdrawing later, or replace them while we still could,” Mwatelulo explained. With the deadline for replacements approaching, the federation informed the NNOC of the situation and opted to call up Steinkopff and Sinclair as the reserve pair.Mwatelulo explained that beach volleyball relies heavily on established partnerships, making it difficult to simply replace an injured player with someone who had not regularly competed alongside the remaining teammate.Although Steinkopff and Sinclair were already established playing partners, having won the U19 boys’ division at the Bank Windhoek Open in August, their preparations for Dakar were affected by the late call-up.Mwatelulo said the pair had to balance training with school examinations and additional academic work ahead of their absence during the Games. This resulted in the cancellation of another planned training camp, with only a two-day camp in Rundu going ahead. The federation president said the circumstances highlighted the importance of identifying and preparing several competitive pairs well ahead of major international competitions. He also thanked the NNOC for providing financial assistance towards the team’s preparations.Tough competitionNamibia opened their campaign on Saturday with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-13) defeat to Sierra Leone’s Sulaiman Bangura and Alie Kainesie, who had won the African Beach Volleyball Youth Development Cup in August.Their second encounter later that day proved even more demanding as Germany’s reigning U18 world champions Lasse Hüper and Filo Wüst routed the Namibians 2-0 (21-3, 21-6).Steinkopff and Sinclair, however, produced a more competitive showing in Sunday’s final pool match against Morocco’s Yasser Errazi and Othmane Taghdouini. The Namibians claimed their first set of the tournament 22-20 before Morocco fought back to take the second 21-13 and clinch the deciding tie-break 15-12, ending Namibia’s campaign without a victory.Ishitile acknowledged that the team’s performances had fallen short of expectations, but said the results also exposed technical weaknesses that require attention.“Our biggest challenge was first-ball reception and poor side-out efficiency,” he explained.“We struggled to control the opponents’ serves consistently, which affected our ability to organise effective attacks and win points when receiving serve.”The coach said poor reception limited his charges’ attacking options and allowed opponents to maintain pressure, while decision-making, attacking variations and defensive positioning also needed improvement. He nevertheless identified the opening-set victory against Morocco as an encouraging indication of the pair’s ability to compete when they maintained good ball control and tactical discipline.Lessons for the futureIshitile said the campaign had reinforced the need for a sustainable national beach volleyball development programme, with a larger pool of competitive players, early selection, regular training camps and greater international exposure.“We cannot expect our athletes to perform consistently at the highest international level through short-term preparation alone. International competitions should be the result of a long-term development programme, not the starting point of our preparation.”Sinclair acknowledged the high standard of competition, particularly against Germany, and said the experience provided valuable lessons despite the disappointing results.“The competition was definitely very high, as expected. It was also very interesting to play against the current U18 world champions, Germany, and we learned a lot from that game,” he said. Both players identified the humid conditions as a challenge, while Steinkopff acknowledged that maintaining consistency had been one of his biggest difficulties.“My biggest takeaway was learning to embrace the hard. High pressure requires real mental toughness. This experience taught me how to push past my comfort zone,” Steinkopff said.– mariud@nsh.com.na
