All set for Cosafa Cup

Namibia’s first match at the upcoming Cosafa Cup will be against northern neighbours Angola on 28 June in Gqeberha, South Africa. This was confirmed after Cosafa recently released the fixtures, following a draw that took place last week on Friday. The Brave Warriors will be in Group C with Angola, Seychelles and Lesotho. Only the group winners are guaranteed a place in the semi-final, while the best runner-up out of the three groups also guaranteed a place in the last four. Namibia, who won the tournament once before, will be seeking to avenge their 2024 Africa Cup of Nations defeat in the round 16 at the hands of Angola. The Brave Warriors will be hoping to go further in a competition they won in 2015. Namibia however face a daunting task, as history favours the Angolans. Collin Benjamin’s team will be hoping to put an end to their 30-year winless record against the neighbours. The two teams have met 13 times ever since their first fixture in 1994 and Angola has come out victorious on seven occasions. Namibia has managed six draws against Angola, with their last draw dating back to 2011 in an international friendly. Former team captain Ronald Ketjijere is adamant the team can produce good performances at the tournament. “We do have a good chance of making it out of the group even if we may be facing Angola. “I have no doubt that the players and the coach are capable of producing top performances against many of these teams,” Ketjijere said. The Brave Warriors will then confront Lesotho on 1 July in what will again be a crucial encounter. Namibia and Lesotho first battled each other in 1992 in an international friendly, which saw the Brave Warriors losing 2-0. The early dominance of Lesotho over Namibia however diminished as both teams are now totalling four wins each. The two teams were involved in four drawn matches out of the 12 matches they have played so far. Namibia’s final group match will be against another tricky opponent, Seychelles, on 3 July. The Brave Warriors are unbeaten against Seychelles, with three wins and three draws from six meetings. Their first-ever match against Seychelles was a Fifa World Cup qualifier in 2000, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
