Afrocat Ladies were on Saturday crowned champions of the Central Volleyball Association (CVA) League after storming to victory over Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) with a comfortable straight-sets (3-0) win.

Held at Ramatex Hall in Otjomuise, Windhoek, the encounter was a high-stakes clash as the two rivals topped the women’s section on 36 points.

DTS had reached the final after beating City of Windhoek 3-0 at home on Wednesday evening. Afrocat also proved to be a force when they put 3-0 past University of Namibia (Unam) Queens B in their opening match of Saturday’s finale.

Upping the stakes was the history of the two teams sharing points earlier in the season, when their first encounter ended 3-2 in favour of DTS. The title decider turned into the ultimate showdown, giving fans real value for their money.

Afrocat Ladies vs DTS

The odds were not in favour of DTS, as they trailed early, only managing 16 points to Afrocat Ladies’ 25 in the first set.

One could argue Afrocat Ladies drew strength from their fans, whose chants overpowered those of DTS and filled the arena with victory songs.

The second set witnessed DTS play catch-up as they fought back from 24-21 to push the set into extra points, levelling at 24-24 and again at 25-25, but Afrocat proved too strong and closed it out 27-25.

The third set was just as tightly contested, with DTS edging ahead 21-19 and 22-20 at crucial moments. But they lost their two-point cushion as Afrocat rallied to level at 22-22 before sealing the set 25-23 and with it, the match.

‘We wanted to beat them 3-0’

Reflecting on the victory, Afrocat Ladies captain Anna Kadhila was all smiles.

“[The victory] feels good after such a hectic game. We have been working hard for this match. We wanted to beat them 3-0 because they had beaten us 3-2 earlier in the season.

“We wanted a clear victory at the title and we got it. Now our focus is on winning the Bank Windhoek Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup in October,” she said.

Afrocat secured the floating trophy and gold medals on 39 points, ahead of DTS, which settled for silver on 36 points.

Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) were comfortable in third place to secure bronze, with a nine-point cushion (28) ahead of fourth-placed Revivals (19).

Nust’s two closing matches saw them beat City Warriors 3-0 and Revivals 3-1. The Afrocat Titans versus Unam Queens B encounter ended 3-0 to Queens.

Men’s section champions

The men’s section champions had already been decided on Wednesday evening, when undefeated defending champions NamPower overcame University of Namibia (Unam) Kings in straight sets (3-0).

They were awarded their floating trophy and gold medals on Saturday after closing out a flawless season, remaining undisputed champions like last season with 58 points.

NamPower’s final victims of the season were City of Windhoek, whom they beat in straight sets, and Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Hurricanes, whom they conceded a set to but won 3-1.

NDF Hurricanes secured the silver medal on 48 points. Their last victims were Unam Kings, whom they beat 3-1.

Kudos were crowned bronze medallists on 42 points after a 3-1 win over fourth-placed Afrocat D (40). Afrocat D’s sole win of the day came with a 3-0 victory over Afrocat E.

Other men’s section closing matches: City of Windhoek 3-0 Nust Falcons, Training Establishment 3-0 Nust Blazers, Training Establishment 3-1 Afrocat E, Nust Falcons 3-1 Afrocat E.
