Afrocat causes upset as weekend games excite
Matches in the MTC Namibia Netball Premier League excited over the weekend at the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police College in Windhoek.
On Sunday, Namibia Correctional Service (NCS) beat Navy 43-39 in a very tense match. In the first, closely-contested quarter, NCS led 10-9.
The two sides continued their competition in the second quarter with Navy turning the results over and leading 21-16. In the third quarter, both sides put all their blood and sweat in it with NCS leading 31-30.
On Saturday, it was Afrocat Lions which caused a great upset as they beat favourites Navy 45-43. Afrocat Lions dominated all the quarters with Navy almost catching up in the third, but the side - coached by Dimitri Bitler - maintained the tempo throughout to win.
Bitler said they maintained the game plan throughout the three quarters.
“We were unravelled in last quarter. The steam went out of the players. I think the fitness was lacking to finish it off on the same consistency. It was a great performance, which shows that we are growing in depth and getting better game per game,” he said.
“We have almost a brand-new team. We have lost players to other teams and we have restructured and are rebranding. For us, it’s one game at a time. We have a three-year plan to be in the top two,” he added.
Venje Maherero was voted player of the match.
In other matches, Otjozondjupa Nampol defeated NCS 39-34, while Mighty Gunners beat Tigers 54-51.
