Keetmanshoop completes senior citizens food parcel roll-out
Over 1 600 pensioners benefit
More than 1 600 senior citizens benefited from a food parcel distribution programme rolled out by the Keetmanshoop Municipality, following the successful completion of a phased handover this week.
The programme officially commenced on 2 January 2026 and was implemented in four phases to ensure an orderly and efficient distribution across designated areas. Phase 1 took place on 2 January, followed by Phase 2 on 7 January and Phase 3 on 8 January. The final phase was concluded on 9 January 2026, marking the end of the scheduled roll-out.
Municipal officials emphasised that the food parcels are intended exclusively for registered senior citizens and are not meant for any other groups. Elderly residents who have not yet completed the mandatory data collection form introduced in November 2024 were encouraged to visit the municipal offices to finalise their registration, which remains a requirement for future assistance programmes.
Senior citizens who were unable to collect their parcels during the scheduled phases have been advised that they may do so at the municipal offices between 12 and 16 January 2026.
While many community members welcomed the initiative, some raised concerns about the continued exclusion of people living with disabilities from similar programmes.
The municipality reiterated its commitment to supporting vulnerable residents and urged the community to adhere to registration and collection procedures to ensure fairness and transparency.
