Close to 700 000 kg cannabis bust confirmed
Over 130 arrested for various drug offences
The unusually high volume of cannabis seized by Namibian police in June raised eyebrows, but a police spokesperson has confirmed the figure is accurate.
The Namibian Police have confirmed the seizure of a massive 696 087.88 kg of cannabis in June.
But how does this figure compare to the rest of the world?
In April this year, Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency destroyed 1.4 million kilograms of cannabis, according to broadcaster Channels Television. Nigeria’s population is estimated at more than 237.5 million, compared to Namibia’s three million residents.
According to the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), Bulgaria, where cannabis use and sale are also banned, recorded the highest cannabis seizures in 2022 – the agency’s most recent data – with 28 466.88 kg confiscated by police that year. Bulgaria’s population at the time was 6.643 million.
Romania ranked second among the five European countries for which EUDA had cannabis statistics that year, with 3 586.34 kg seized. Its population in 2022 stood at 19.05 million.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Africans accounted for 44% of global cannabis herb and resin users in 2023.
More than 130 individuals arrested
According to the Namibian Police, drug seizures in June included 331 mandrax tablets, 7.2 grams of cocaine, 128 units of crack cocaine and 14 straws of methamphetamine (tik).
Of the 137 people arrested in connection with drug offences, 129 were Namibian nationals. The remaining suspects included four Angolan nationals, two Zambians, one Tanzanian, and one citizen of Eswatini.
The police did not provide estimated total values for the various drugs seized.
