73% of Namibians experience food shortages - report

Almost three-quarters (73%) of Namibians said in the latest Afrobarometer survey that they or a family member did not have enough food to eat at least once in the past year. This is 26% higher than in the same survey in 2017. More than half of Namibians (62%) said that at least once in the past year they did not have enough fuel to cook. Over the past year, a quarter of Namibians (25%) have gone without basic necessities such as enough food, enough clean water for home use, medicine or medical treatment, enough fuel to cook food or a cash income. This places them in a high level of poverty. Another 39% of Namibians experienced a moderate level of poverty over the past year. Only 8% of Namibians have not experienced any level of poverty over the past year. Overall, the Afrobarometer survey showed that food shortages and famine are Namibians&#039; third biggest priority that they want the government to address. The overwhelming majority (63%) said unemployment was the biggest problem that needed addressing, while a quarter of Namibians (25%) believe that education is the biggest problem that must be addressed. Food shortage came in third with 23% of respondents seeing it as the biggest problem. Afrobarometer surveys are conducted among sample groups of 1 200 people over the age of 18 who represent the demographics of a country. In Namibia, the sample group is provided by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA). This test method provides 95% confidence within three percentage points.
