Zambezi faces renewed locust threat
NEWS IN SHORT
The agriculture ministry has confirmed a locust outbreak in the Zambezi Region, warning of a potential second wave fuelled by previous rainfall and green vegetation. The infestation, first reported in February, has affected at least 11 constituencies, with locusts spotted near the Chobe River floodplains. Ministry executive director Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata said conditions remain ideal for reproduction, and as vegetation dries, the insects may regroup and swarm northward. Ministry teams have been deployed to monitor and control the spread using sprayers and mist blowers. Farmers are urged to report any sightings to local development centres.
