Windhoek fire calls hit 2 000 a year
Windhoek records about 2 000 fire call-outs a year, and the city's fire services respond to 99% of them, mayor Sakaria Uunona said at the official opening of International Fire Safety Week in Windhoek.
Uunona said 70% of the incidents attended were structural fires and 40% of those occurred in informal settlements.
He said the challenges facing informal settlements were well known and the City was working to address them.
The remaining 1% of incidents go unattended because some residents do not know how to alert the fire brigade, he said.
