Water released from Naute Dam
NEWS IN SHORT
The Naute Dam, Namibia’s third-largest dam after Hardap and Neckartal, officially surpassed full capacity, with a capacity of 105.7% reached by yesterday.
As a result, NamWater initiated controlled releases. Two sluice gates were opened at an opening of 0.9 m, releasing water at a combined rate of approximately 200 m³/s. Naute Dam is located on the Löwen River, south-west of Keetmanshoop, and was designed with four radial sluice gates to safely discharge excess water. Released water flows downstream into the Löwen River, eventually merging with the Fish River, which also carries overflow from Neckartal Dam. This combined flow continues south to meet the Orange River between Rosh Pinah and Aussenkehr and ultimately reaches the Atlantic Ocean at Oranjemund.
