The police have identified the two British nationals who died in a plane crash near Gobabeb Research Centre, in the Namib Desert, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the official incident report by the Erongo police, three British researchers – John Lowe, Alan Martin Wilson (62) and Neil Thomas Oakman (63) – arrived in Namibia on 25 February to conduct research at Gobabeb.

The police stated that at about 17:00 on Wednesday, Wilson and Oakman took off in a light aircraft to search for animal tracking collars in the surrounding dunes.

When the pair failed to return, Lowe raised the alarm at around 19:00, prompting a search around the area. The wreckage of the aircraft was later discovered near the Gobabeb airstrip.

Wilson and Oakman were found with fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene.

Police were notified and the bodies were transported to the Walvis Bay police mortuary. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
