Swapo's Zambezi treasurer expelled for running as independent candidate
The ruling Swapo Party has expelled its Zambezi regional treasurer, Morven Mukwata, after he registered as an independent candidate to contest the upcoming regional elections in the Judea Lyaboloma constituency.
In a letter dated 15 October and signed by party secretary-general Sophia Shaningwa, the party informed Mukwata that by choosing to stand as an independent, he had effectively “ex-communicated” himself from the party in line with Article 6(1)(b) of the Swapo constitution.
The letter further stated that Mukwata had ceased to hold any position within Swapo structures, including his role as regional treasurer.
Shaningwa’s letter underscored the party’s long-standing position that members who contest elections against official Swapo candidates automatically forfeit their membership. It comes a week after former Oniipa mayor Jafet Augustus was expelled from Swapo after registering as an independent candidate for the Oniipa constituency.
