Scam alert

The Namibian police have warned the public about a scam targeting people looking for jobs as drivers. Police said a syndicate advertises fake vacancies for drivers to transport tourists and asks applicants to submit personal documents, including CVs, identity documents and drivers’ licences.

The criminals allegedly then use the documents to rent expensive vehicles, particularly 4x4s, without the victims’ knowledge.

Police also warned of another scheme in which people are recruited to register SIM cards and open bank accounts for strangers in exchange for payment.

The accounts and SIM cards are allegedly then used in vehicle rental transactions and to contact other victims, leaving the individuals linked to the crimes.

Four suspects have been arrested so far, and investigations are under way in cooperation with neighbouring countries.

The public was urged not to share personal documents, register SIM cards or open bank accounts for strangers, regardless of the payment offered.
