Ompundja councillor warns youth against drugs

NEWS IN SHORT

Ompundja constituency councillor Adolf Uunona has urged young people to stay away from drugs, warning that substance abuse is destroying families, communities and the nation at large.

Speaking during a recent police community engagement meeting with residents of Okaku Kiipupu, Uunona said many young people have become victims of drug addiction, which threatens their future and direction in life.

“I have seen many young people lose their vision and purpose because of drugs,” he said, calling on the youth to make better choices and focus on building their lives and communities.

Namibia has seen a rise in drug-related crimes, particularly involving cannabis, mandrax, crack cocaine and ecstasy. The police reported seizing narcotics valued at over N$10 million in the first half of 2025 alone.

Government, along with community leaders and the police, continues to roll out awareness campaigns, urging parents, schools and traditional authorities to play a greater role in preventing drug abuse among youth.
