The Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) has confirmed a chickenpox outbreak at the Oluno Correctional Facility in Ondangwa.

NCS spokesperson Salmi Hangula said the facility has recorded six active cases. She explained that only affected cells have been isolated to contain the outbreak, while unaffected inmates continue with their normal activities, including attending court.

“Only those infected cannot go to court. About nine to 10 inmates were sent to different courts this morning, some as far as Okongo,” Hangula said yesterday.

Hangula added that the correctional facility is informing the courts whenever an inmate is unable to appear because of the outbreak.

She said the facility has doctors and nurses on site who are attending to sick inmates.
