The official inauguration of the renovated Okapuka road traffic checkpoint was launched yesterday together with the start of the 2025/2026 festive season road safety campaign.

Transport minister Veikko Nekundi said the upgraded checkpoint marks a major step forward in strengthening Namibia’s road safety and transport infrastructure. He emphasised that the modern facility will enhance the monitoring of vehicles, improve the detection of overloaded and unsafe vehicles, and support law-enforcement efforts through advanced technology.

Nekundi added that, as a key gateway into Windhoek, the upgraded checkpoint plays a vital role in safeguarding passengers, goods and national mobility. He noted that the project, funded by the Road Fund Administration, reflects government’s commitment to saving lives and ensuring safer roads during the festive season and beyond.
