New mattresses soften hospital stay

A mattress shortage at Engela District Hospital in Ohangwena has been resolved.

This follows Ohangwena governor Kadiva Hamutumwa’s visit in June, where she found pregnant patients sleeping on beds without mattresses in a temporary shelter and ordered management to act immediately.

Senior medical officer Dr Lukas Nghaamwa says the situation is now fixed. He said expectant mothers have been moved from the shelter to a fully equipped maternity ward with sufficient mattresses, supported by 100 mattresses donated by Sanlam last year.

He added that the hospital has also purchased an additional 200 mattresses, which will be distributed across all wards to ensure no patient ever sleeps on a bare bed again.
