Nekundi demands fair pay for road workers
NEWS IN SHORT
Works minister Veikko Nekundi has ordered Chico, the company constructing the Nepara-Nkurenkuru road, to ensure its security subcontractor Tulikumo Security Service signs contracts with employees and pays them their correct wages.
Workers are reportedly being paid N$8.75 per hour at the moment, instead of the gazetted N$13.50. Nekundi, during a site visit on Sunday, warned that if the changes are not made by Wednesday, the subcontractor must be fired.
He was accompanied by Kavango West governor Verna Sinimbo as they assessed the Nepara-Nkurenkuru and Charlie-Catline roads, where residents have raised several SME concerns.
The Nepara road project, worth N$29 million, faced delays last year after the previous local contractor was released due to poor performance. The Roads Authority then appointed Chico to continue work on the road.
