Namibia moves closer to banning some plastic products
Namibia's environmental commissioner Timoteus Mufeti on Tuesday said Namibia is edging closer to banning the production and importation of certain plastic products as public consultations on proposed environmental law amendments and new sand and gravel mining regulations roll out nationwide.
Mufeti made the remarks during a consultation meeting in Eenhana, Ohangwena Region, where he presented the proposed Environmental Management Act (EMA) Amendment Bill and draft Sand and Gravel Mining Regulations to community members, traditional leaders, local authorities and other stakeholders.
He said the amendments aim to modernise the Environmental Management Act of 2007 by closing regulatory gaps that have emerged over nearly two decades, while promoting sustainable use of natural resources and minimising environmental degradation.
“The objective of these consultations is to hear directly from the public and stakeholders. Their inputs are critical in developing a stronger, updated legal framework that responds to current environmental challenges,” he said.
Mufeti also highlighted government’s increasing focus on plastic pollution, warning that non-biodegradable plastics pose serious risks to ecosystems, wildlife and human health.
