LAC, EU empower San communities
NEWS IN SHORT
In a concerted effort to bolster access to justice for Namibia’s marginalised San communities, the Legal Assistance Centre (LAC), in partnership with the European Union (EU), concluded a four-day legal empowerment field programme in Tsumkwe last week.
Held from 8 to 11 July, the outreach formed part of the broader EU-funded initiative 'Empowering San Communities – Legal Capacity Building for Human Rights Access'.
The programme brought together San paralegals from across the country to enhance grassroots legal knowledge and strengthen the protection of human rights within their communities.
The field mission was spearheaded by LAC’s programme coordinator, Corinna Van Wyk, and facilitated by project team members Santos Joas and Lukeno Hangala. The Office of the Ombudsman, under the leadership of advocate Basilius Dyakugha, also played a pivotal role during the engagement, offering both complaint reception services and public education on citizen rights.
