Kalkrand soup kitchen needs your help

Kalkrand-based Hearty-Hands Soup Kitchen founder Magreth Garises (59) is appealing to community members to donate food items, saying the initiative sometimes struggles to collect enough supplies to feed those in need.

“Yesterday we did not prepare anything for the children. We sometimes have to skip days due to a lack of food. We appeal to the public to help us,” Garises said.

Hearty-Hands Soup Kitchen was established four years ago after Garises identified a need for support in the community.

The soup kitchen provides meals to about 100 children and several elderly residents in the settlement, which faces high unemployment. Kalkrand has a population of about 1 600 people, with many residents relying on livestock and cattle farming for their livelihoods.
