Kalkfeld a ‘ghost town’
Elderly Kalkfeld residents say they feel neglected as they struggle with mounting municipal debts and limited income opportunities in the settlement. The Khaibasen elderly group raised the concerns during a meeting this week, with chairperson Walter Khoaob saying residents have tried negotiating with the settlement office over their outstanding bills.
Kalkfeld resident Kennedy Uirab said the settlement has transformed from a once-busy town with hotels, shops and supermarkets to what he describes as a “ghost town”, leaving the community with little economic activity.
He blamed the decline on political decisions and said residents want Kalkfeld to have its own councillor instead of being placed under the Otjiwarongo constituency.
