Inter-ministerial forum to tackle disability barriers

Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has reaffirmed government’s commitment to eliminating barriers faced by persons with disabilities and ensuring the full integration of inclusive government programmes across all sectors to achieve this aim.

He was speaking on Sunday at the official opening of an inter-ministerial forum on inclusion and sustainability in Windhoek.

Ngurare noted that more than 100 000 people in Namibia – around 5% of the population – live with disabilities.

Despite this significant number, many continue to face obstacles in accessing education, sports, healthcare, employment and social inclusion.

"This inter-ministerial forum acts as a springboard for coordinated efforts, enabling joint policy development, collective resource mobilisation and shared accountability," Ngurare said.

"From ministries to municipalities, from boardrooms to classrooms, we must break down silos and build bridges,” he urged.

Ngurare stressed that adopting assistive technologies, implementing inclusive physical education curricula, and ensuring adaptive infrastructure should be included in government programmes until they become the norm.

He further stressed that through dismantling barriers and fostering effective public-private partnerships, Namibia can amplify its impact and maximise limited resources through unified and strategic action.
