HEALTH UNDER STRAIN

The parliamentary standing committee on gender equality, health and social welfare has identified major infrastructure, equipment and staffing challenges in the Oshikuku Health District as it concluded its oversight mission in the Omusati region.The committee heard that the district serves the largest catchment population in the region and is struggling to meet growing demand for healthcare services.Okalongo Health Centre, largely because of its proximity to the Angola border, now serves a bigger catchment population than the Tsandi and Okahao district hospitals. The district has renewed its call for the facility to be upgraded to a district hospital.Poor road infrastructure continues to limit access to healthcare, with some clinics becoming inaccessible during certain periods. Ambulance shortages, non-functional X-ray machines and ageing sonar equipment have also weakened emergency response and diagnostic services.Recurring shortages of contraceptives and condoms have contributed to rising HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases, while high staff turnover continues to strain already limited human resources.The committee heard that Omuthitugwonyama Clinic faces severe space constraints, forcing staff to rotate services instead of offering comprehensive care daily. Staff accommodation is also inadequate, with some healthcare workers living in makeshift shacks, while the clinic still relies on a pit latrine because it lacks proper sanitation.PHOTOS AND TEXT: CONTRIBUTED
