Half of Omaheke rely on food aid, governor says
More than 67 000 Omaheke residents – nearly half the region’s population – currently rely on government food aid.
This is according to Omaheke governor Pijoo Nganate, who expressed concern over the region’s heavy dependence on drought relief during his state of the region address today.
Nganate reported that the Omaheke Regional Council has distributed extensive drought relief packs, including 270 900 bags of maize meal, 270 000 litres of cooking oil and 108 000 units of combined fish and soya beans.
A total of 22 575 households have benefitted from drought relief interventions, totalling 67 725 individuals, underscoring the severity of food insecurity ravaging the region, the governor said.
