City condemns plant thieves
Green spaces threatened by theft
The City of Windhoek has expressed dismay over the theft of trees and shrubs that were planted to honour Arbour Day.
The City of Windhoek has voiced concern over the persistent theft of recently planted vegetation across the city.
The thefts have included flowers, trees and shrubs.
In a statement, the City said a particularly disheartening incident involved the uprooting and theft of all trees and shrubs planted along Independence Avenue, which were intended to commemorate Arbour Day, a holiday that celebrates the planting, upkeep and preservation of trees.
"As a city, we are dedicated to creating a more vibrant and aesthetically pleasing environment for our residents. The diligent work and dedication of our team in planting and maintaining these green spaces aim to enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community," the statement affirmed.
Be vigilant
The City appealed to residents for their support and cooperation in preserving the communal efforts invested in the beautification of public spaces.
The municipality emphasised that the plunder of plants not only hampers the city's beautification initiatives but also undermines the sense of community and pride that is sought to be nurtured among residents.
In response to these incidents, the City of Windhoek urges all its community members to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities related to the illegal removal of plants. To report such incidents, individuals are encouraged to reach out to the City Police at 061-302-302 or send an SMS to 4444.
